World fashion giants focus on Turkey Print
TURQUIE
Wednesday, 14 May 2008
The Association of the Registered Trade Marks (TMD) was contacted by Italian fashion houses Giorgio Armani and Gianfranco Ferré who wanted to use traditional Turkish and Ottoman patterns in their latest collections. Some sort of novelty for brands that used to take inspiration from Indian, African or Chinese cultures. The TMD recommended them 5 recently graduated Turkish fashion designers 'whose creativity is not restricted to certain models or patterns, and who are able to reflect Turkey's connection with its Ottoman past through their designs'.

According to Tuna Kılıboz (TMD - Istanbul Bijuteri), instead of focusing on 'narrow areas like jeans, scarves or T-shirt design', Turkey ought to 'present the world not imitations but authentic Turkish and Ottoman styles' and prepare collections so as to develop brands. The luxury market in Turkey seems indeed rather flourishing: development of shops in luxury hotels, growing demand for mono-brands stores...
