LA CITÉ

1st silk production unit in Tunisia Print
Tuesday, 11 March 2008
Initiated by Tunisia and Korea, a development project of the silk sector has begun at the end of 2007 in the Hwamdia region (Tabarka delegation) with the creation of a modern silk production unit.

11 hectares have been planted with mulberry trees, next to a breeding laboratory where bombyx are being cared of at the beginning of their life, before being given to breeders.

The Ministry of Agriculture intends to develop mulberry growing (200 hectares to produce about 150 to 200 tons of silk cocoons a year).

The silk has been produced for the Tunisian market which seems to be growing (ajar, sefsari, takrita, hrem, houli...).
